Encouraging More Young People to Explore Apprenticeships in Australia

As we navigate the future of work, it’s clear that apprenticeships offer a dynamic and valuable pathway for young Australians. In countries like Germany and Switzerland, around 50-60% of young people choose vocational education, fueling strong economies through skilled trades.  In Australia, however, the focus often remains on university degrees.

But here’s the truth: not everyone thrives in the traditional university system. Recent data shows that up to 30% of Australian students don’t complete their degrees. This gap often leaves young people with debt and no clear direction.

Apprenticeships bridge this gap, providing hands-on experience, paid training, and opportunities to master a trade.  Apprenticeships should not be seen of as less than degrees or a fall back option but as a viable alternative to university requiring significant technical knowledge.  They provide a pathway to job security, growth, and financial independence.

We recently sat down with our apprentices at AI&S and asked them why they chose a trade as an Engineering Tradesperson.  The main reasons given for this choice of apprenticeship is that an apprenticeship is a quick pathway to a career, it offers job security/ stability and is a perfect choice for someone who enjoys hands on work.

It’s time to broaden the conversation. Let’s empower the next generation with more than one path to success. Whether it’s engineering, construction, IT, or health services, apprenticeships can unlock a world of opportunity. 🌟
