Prioritizing Safety: Welding Helmets with Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPR)

99.96% Reduction

At AI&S, we believe in prioritising the health and safety of our workforce. To enhance protection for our welders, we are actively encouraging the use of welding helmets equipped with Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPR). This initiative is not about compliance, but about genuinely caring for our team’s well-being.

Why PAPR Helmets?

1. Superior Respiratory Protection: PAPR helmets provide a higher level of respiratory protection compared to traditional helmets. They filter out harmful fumes and particulates, significantly reducing the risk of respiratory issues. According to a study conducted by AWS, a welding helmet with PAPR can reduce exposure to welding fume by at least 99.96% and exposure to ozone by 100%.

2. Improved Comfort and Productivity: PAPR systems deliver a continuous flow of fresh air, reducing heat and moisture inside the helmet. This enhances comfort and allows our welders to focus on their tasks for longer periods without discomfort or fatigue. Studies have shown that improved comfort can lead to increased productivity and higher-quality work.

3. Enhanced Visibility and Safety: The clear, unobstructed view provided by PAPR helmets ensures welders have better visibility of their work area, reducing the likelihood of errors and accidents. This feature is crucial for maintaining high safety standards in our operations.

The Science Behind PAPR

Ozone is an extremely toxic gas that is generated when ultraviolet radiation produced by the welding arc reacts with oxygen.  Undetectable to the human eye, ozone can cause serious health issues to unprotected welders.  Research published by AWS highlights that PAPR systems reduce exposure to welding fumes by 99.96% and ozone by 100%.  The results of this study demonstrates that a Welding Helmet with PAPR should be considered a priority, regardless of the quantity of welding fume generated or time spent welding.

At AI&S, we are committed to adopting the best safety practices and technologies. By encouraging the use of PAPR welding helmets, we are taking a proactive step towards ensuring a safer and healthier work environment for our team.

Let’s continue to work together to create a workplace where safety is the top priority! 💪
