Using technology and a consultative approach, to reduce lead times and win business!

A client came to AI&S asking if we could manufacture basket strainers for their client who needed them in a hurry. Having initially quoted a lead time and price our client needed something better. Our estimating team sat down with our machine operators and discussed how we could reduce time and costs. Our highly experienced CNC operators, with compete knowledge of the capabilities of the machines they use every day, suggested a particular technique and ran a test program to see if it would reduce the times already quoted. The test program reduced the times significantly and gave us an estimated time to complete the task, which in turn allowed us to reprice the job. The strainers needed approximately 1500 holes drilled and in a particular formation. With the new times, our team were able to requote and successfully win the job.

Using load sensing technology on our Doosan 5 axis machine, we were able to drill the 1500 holes in under 45 minutes, whilst being able to see the pressure and wear being applied to the drill bit itself. This capability allowed us also to reduce the amount of consumables required for the job and therefore the overall cost. As a side note – The test program estimated the holes would be done in 42 minutes.
